Nishi Munshi, Gia, The Originals

The Originals Nishi Munshi, new vampire Gia, was Miss India California in 2006!

The Originals Nishi Munshi plays Marcel’s newbie vampire Gia, the soulful rocker girl with a violin who came to New Orleans to find meaning in her life.

Gia, a vampire in training who was reluctant to rip Elijah’s heart out, lost her mother when she was younger. Raised by a “jerk” step father, she packed her violin and moved to New Orleans for the music scene and to begin a new life.

When Josh rounded up potential recruits for Marcel, he sensed Gia would be the one who would find her way back to them to become a vampire. Marcel was doubtful, until she showed up to join his new vampire army. Seeking new meaning in her life, this tough no-nonsense newbie was just broken enough for Elijah to try and fix her.

Nishi Munshi, the actress behind the new fangs, was crowned Miss India California in 2006 and Miss National Orange Show Scholarship in 2011. But she’s more than just a beautiful face.

While most people take 4 to 5 years to get a Bachelors Degree, Nishi graduated in 2 years and 8 months with a BA in Pre Law-Political Science with an emphasis in International Relations from the University of California, Riverside, on the Dean’s List! Along the way she was also President of the Asian Indian Student Association, Pledge Class President of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority, and one of just 10 academic students picked to be part of the prestigious Washington D.C. UCDC program. If that wasn’t enough, she was also a research studies abroad candidate to study at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England.

Nishi also has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and was a first place winner at Young Olympians Nationals in the categories of highest kick, form, and sparring.

She is also an accomplished musician, being picked as a composer from the GSA Academy to write music for NBC. Nishi has also performed over 500 vocals and performed dances in 12 countries. She is also owner and managing partner of Studio X in Burbank, California.

As a dancer, Nishi participated on the NBC reality show “Superstars of Dance” in the “Bollywood Dancers” group for India as a duet with Sangita Sanyal. Their dance was about two sisters in love with the same guy. They only got 51 points and were eventually eliminated.

In additional to all her other accomplishments, she has also done modeling, although she is most proud of her acting and singing skills.

Nishi describes herself as a “sporty, awkward girl” when she was growing up, who wanted to be a positive role model for children and South Asian youth. She has said, “It is important to remember to respect yourself, do the best that you can do, and be strong in your convictions.”

Nishi on being a role model

I wish to be a positive role model for South Asian youth and all other young people.  I want them to point up to the television screen and see someone that looks like them, doing something that one day they may choose to do.  I wish to stand as that girl next door – which I am, who grew up in America having a dream just like everyone else, and was able to achieve it.

She constantly strives for more. Where other people might give up, she gets fired up. And she has fun doing it! She’s inspired every day by the little things around her, but especially by her parents and the goodness of others.

In addition to Gia on The Originals, some of the other roles Nishi has had include Leena in “Touch Wood,” Shalini in “Days of Our Lives,” Priya in “Switched at Birth,” Leela Penjore in “Drop Dead Diva,” Ashley in “Revolution,” and Julia in “Pretty Little Liars.”

Currently Nishi is scheduled to appear as Gia on episodes 2×10, 2×12, and 2×13.
