Mr. Robot starring Rami Malek and Christian Slater has received an early second season renewal from USA Network!
USA Network has rewarded it’s quirky new series Mr. Robot with an early second season renewal which thrills it’s stars Rami Malek and Christian Slater!
The series centers on Elliot, a paranoid psychotic, anti-social, vigilante hacker with bouts of disillusion and depression, played deliciously by Rami Malek, who has focused his sites on taking down E(vil) Corp. His colleagues in crime include Mr. Robot, played by Christian Slater, who it turns out is Elliot’s dead father and is only a figment of his imagination, and fellow hacker Darlene, played by Carly Chaikin, who happens to be his sister. His closed world also includes Angela, played by Portia Doubleday, who is a childhood friend of him and his family and possibly a love interest (at least in his mind).
Mr. Robot is a win-win for Christian Slater, who has had a few series that have been quickly cancelled. He admits that being renewed so quickly is preferable to the cancellation merry-go-round, and is thrilled they’ll continue filming in New York. This is Rami Malek’s first time starring in a series, and he admits having Christian as a co-star and getting an early renewal makes him feel very fortunate.
Sam Esmail, the creator and producer of the series, has expert Michael Bazzell, who helps keep the hacking scenes real. Michael worked with the FBI cyber task force and says, “if there’s any computer script on the screen, it’s accurate.” According to Rami, Elliot’s laptops have tape over their web cams and advises everybody to do the same. Do you have tape over your web cam?
The series has opened the minds of Christian and Rami about this new Internet information age. Christian realizes “we’re living in a very exposed society. Privacy is a myth.” Rami wonders “if people are going to regret [this] one day.”
Rami tries to do Elliot’s voice overs as soon as an episode is filmed, so everything is fresh in his mind, and admits that while doing these sequences, “I just zone out.” During filming scenes he has an earwig and Sarah Block, a PA on the show, prompts him with what his voice overs will be. He thinks Sarah’s voice in his head is “magnetic” and confesses, “I always envisioned the voice in my head to be a female voice. I don’t know what it was, but I gravitated to that as something I could be my honest self with. She’s been terrific.”
Rami’s biggest challenge as Elliot
He can go down a really dark rabbit hole every once in awhile. So I just try to pull him out of that and not make him alienating but instead someone who is relatable and has redeeming qualities.
While our biggest twist shock may have been discovering that Elliot is really Mr. Robot and his father is just an illusion, and that Darlene is really his sister, Rami’s biggest twist shock was getting pushed off the pier by Christian’s character. According to Rami, “Everything happens for a reason.”
Promo for Mr. Robot season finale
Season 1 of Mr. Robot comes to an end when the finale airs Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015, instead of August 26, 2015, at 10/9c, on the USA network, due to the tragic events in Virginia!
