Stephen Moyer, The Bastard Executioner

Bikers and Blood unite with a Bastard when Stephen Moyer and Katey Sagal star in The Bastard Executioner!

True Blood‘s Stephen Moyer will team with Sons of Anarchy’s Katey Sagal for the new FX series The Bastard Executioner, created by Katey Sagal’s husband Kurt Sutter.

The Bastard Executioner, set in the 14th century, is about Wilkin Brattle, played by Australian newcomer Lee Jones, a warrior knight in the charge of King Edward I. Tall, dark, and imposing, he’s spiritually tortured and weary from the ravages of war. Vowing to lay down his sword for a plowshare, he lives a simple, agrarian life. But when violence finds him, he’s forced to pick up the most bloodiest sword of them all.

This is another period piece for Stephen, who spent seven seasons in the 1800s on “True Blood” as Bill Compton before HBO untimely staked the series. He also spent time in the 1930s at Captain Georg von Trapp in “The Sound of Music” and approximately 30 A.D. as Pontius Pilate in “Killing Jesus.”

In The Bastard Executioner Stephen stars as savvy, street-smart, and noble Milus Corbett, part of Ventris’ marshalls army, serving as his Chamberlain, Chancellor, Justiciar, friend, and drinking buddy.

Katey Sagal plays Annora of the Alders, who is prescient, mystical and beautiful, and offers predictions as well as cures and potions.

Katey’s husband Kurt Sutter, creative and executive producer of the series, will also join the cast as The Dark Mute, guardian and mate of Katey’s Annora of the Alders, who rarely speaks and nobody ever sees his face.

Sam Spruell, of “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “The Last Ship,” stars as Toran Prichard, described as a fierce, tenacious archer under Madog Llywelyn, who is in the last major Welsh rebellion. He’s Wilkin’s best mate, and like him, he put down his bow for a hoe.

MatthewRhys-250Matthew Rhys, Phillip Jennings on “The Americans,” will guest star in the pilot as Gruffudd y Blaidd, smart, fearless, and of noble blood, known as The Wolf and lear of the Byth Encil Welsh rebels. Although he’s expected to have a recurring role in the series, it won’t affect his status in “The Americans.” The role of Gruffudd must be interesting for him since he’s best buds with fellow Welshman, Ioan Gruffudd who plays Dr. Henry Morgan in “Forever” and is married to Alice Evans of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals.

Other cast members of The Bastard Executioner include:

Flora Spencer-Longhurst as Baroness Lowry “Love” Aberffraw Ventris; Darren Evans, of “Galavant,” as Ash y Goedwig; Danny Sapani, of “Penny Dreadfu,” as Berber the Moor; Timothy V. Murphy, a fellow “Sons of Anarchy” cast member, as Father Ruskin; Sarah White as Isabel Kiffin; and Sarah Sweeny as Jessamy Maddox.

Shooting began in Wales on March 19, 2015, and is being directed Paris Barclay, who will also produce with Brian Grazer, Francie Calfo, and Kurt Sutter. The Bastard Executioner is expected to go directly to series.
