Exec Producer Julie Plec on the “Crushing” season 6 finale 6×22 “I’m Thinking of You All the While” episode!

The Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec talks about the crushing season 6 finale 6×22 “I’m Thinking of You All the While” as we say good-bye to Elena Gilbert.

Julie reveals the struggle for writing the finale was making it a celebration while making it feel “as final as possible” because Elena Gilbert, played by Nina Dobrev, won’t be returning. So it was a matter of what things they were and were not willing to do with her character.

She says by the end of the first commercial we’ll know what happened at the wedding and it’s aftermath. Julie says, “You’ll have to take a beat and pour a shot of whiskey to get through to the next. But there is an additional move revealed midway through the show where you realize, ‘Oh this is what this is all about.’ And then things just get sad. Sad and beautiful.”

Julie revealed the attack on Bonnie and Matt happened at the same time as the attack on everybody “for a very specific reason.”

Julie Plec on goodbyes for Elena

There’s a whole sequence, essentially the last two acts of the show, where we found an elegant and graceful and beautiful way to weave the goodbyes for Elena all the way through every character on the show who has loved her through the years. I’m a big sap and I’m obviously biased, but it’s incredibly beautiful and very nostalgic and sweet and sad and a really terrific 12 minutes of television.

According to Julie, fans who have watched the show and loved it will be very satisfied and moved with how they finished Elena’s journey. If you watched it for Delena, you may not feel this way. There will be lots of elements and flashbacks between Elena and the other characters that fans will find “sweet and special.”

Her favorite two scenes were after Jeremy’s death and Elena breaks down, turns her humanity off, and sets fire to the house. Her all-time favorite, that crushes her, is from season 1 where Elena and Stefan almost get intimate but he’s afraid to get close. “She makes him show her his veins on his face and she touches him and tells him she’s not afraid.”

Sounds like Damon will be devastated. She said we’ll get “a little tease” of how he’ll handle Elena’s death, and will give us something we can think about during the summer. Season 7 will dive right into his life with what he’s feeling and how he’s doing.

The finale will also deal with Stefan and Caroline’s relationship and what Stefan learns that could help him make a decision about how, or if, he wants to pursue it, since he definitely has feelings for her.

And there will definitely be a cliff-hanger to “wet your whistle” for season 7. It will be “a glimpse of the future, and we see what’s become of our world without Elena Gilbert in it. It’s a little tease to get you talking.”

“I’m Thinking of You All the While” press release synopsis

GOODBYE, MYSTIC FALLS – In the aftermath of Alaric (Matt Davis) and Jo’s (guest star Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) powerful nuptials, things take a dramatic turn when an uninvited guest shows up, leaving Elena (Nina Dobrev) in terrible jeopardy. Despite Matt’s (Zach Roerig) advice to leave town to protect herself, a defiant Bonnie (Kat Graham) takes matters into her own hands after finding herself on the receiving end of a twisted plan. As Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola) reach an emotional crossroad in their relationship, a reunion with Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell) leaves Tyler (Michael Trevino) faced with a decision that could change his life forever. Meanwhile, Lily’s (guest star Annie Wersching) reckless actions cause Stefan to realize the lengths to which his mother will go to reunite with her “family.” Finally, after a devastating chain of events, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is forced to make the most difficult decision of his life. Michael Malarkey also stars.

Sounds like we’ll need a couple of boxes of Kleenex when The Vampire Diaries season 6 finale 6×22 “I’m Thinking of You All the While” airs Thursday, May 14th, 2015, at 8/7c, on The CW!
