Ian Somerhalder talks about directing The Vampire Diaries 6×16 “The Downward Spiral” plus Bonnie’s return!
Ian Somerhalder, Damon on The Vampire Diaries, talks about what it was like directing for the first time, having Bonnie back and how his Mom Lily is like Katherine.
At the end of 6×15 “Let Her Go” Bonnie returned from her prison world, made some pancakes for Damon, and jumped into her BFF Damon’s arms. Before she returned she detoured to 1903 and captured another person who turned out to be Damon and Stefan’s mom Lily, played by Annie Wersching. Damon was stunned since he was sure his mom died of consumption a century ago.
The episode Ian directed began a new chapter for Damon as well as a new opportunity for directing. As he steps behind the camera, his character begins searching for answers. Ian shares his challenges and surprises, why Lily is like Katherine, and if Delena will have a happy ending!
He said he loved the creative process of directing. Beginning with the blank canvas of a stage or set and working with the amazing people who helped support and guide him, especially Michael Allowitz.
Ian credits Michael Allowitz for his help
Michael Allowitz, who was one of our first assistant directors for the first four years, came on as a co-producer and helped me navigate the waters of this episode. It was a huge thing to have someone I’m so close to and who is such a great director on our show to be there with me and spend every day with us. You have your [assistant directors] and your director of photography and without those people it doesn’t work. They guided me and I can only take credit for very little to be honest.
While he enjoyed directing the party scene, which was fun to shoot, he especially enjoyed the scene with Damon and Bonnie where she’s really fed up. He says she always ends up getting hurt and being the fall girl, so it’s intense for her. She tries so hard to help people and it always seems to backfire on her. “This experience in the prison world made her a woman,” said Ian, “and she’s no longer going to deal with this bulls—.”
He says they were “happy to see each other,” and it was really cute seeing them together.
He revealed that Damon is searching for answers now that his mother, Lily, is back. Lily is a lot like Katherine. He loved them both and they both abandoned him and neither loved him. He says it’s a “gnarly thing.” He’ll have to spend time figuring out what really happened, and it’s a brutal thing he’s going to go through trying to find the answers.
As for Damon and Elena, right now they’re happy and trying to make things work. The situation is intense and hard and Damon is putting in a lot of effort, which is a side of him we don’t always see. When asked if he thought it would last he said, “I don’t think that’s absolutely going to happen.” After all, it’s The Vampire Diaries!
