Nathaniel Buzolic, the cast, director, and producers take us behind the scenes of the web series The Originals: The Awakening. It’s final webisode will air December 8th, 2014, on!

Nathaniel says the web series is a chance to shed some light on who “this Kol character was”!

The web series also introduces Mary-Alice Claire, an ancestor of Davina Claire played by Keri Lynn Pratt, who is a sweet witch trying to avoid being involved in the witch war started by Klaus. She gets sucked in by Kol, who is a charming bad boy!

Astrid, played by Aleeah Rogers, is the second witch who joins Mary-Alice in Kol‘s scheme to dagger Klaus for good. She’s extremely suspicious of everything he says. According to Julie Plec, she doesn’t like him one bit.

Discussed are the dark objects, which Kol created with the help of Mary-Alice and Astrid, some of which were used in “The Brothers That Care Forgot,” the “Monster” that Kol really is since he’s an Original vampire, Kol’s “Clubhouse” which is a Claire family tomb and was a great excuse for building a new set, and the “Asylum” which is the Folly cottage where Mary-Alice and Astrid are entombed forever.

As Julie explains, “The little story pieces are actually feeding into the story that’s happening in the present day. By the time we get to our mid-season cliff hanger, both stories from the webisodes and the series itself intertwine and we see them all pay off at once.”

Carina MacKenzie, the writer of the web series and also a writer for the series, reveals the webisodes were originally flashback scenes written for season 1 but never used.

The webisode is the size and length of a typical C story, so I just approached it that way. It was helpful that I also co-wrote episode 207, which is one which ties in pretty heavily with the webisodes, so I could make sure that everything was integrating smoothly, and I worked closely with Julie [Plec] and Marguerite MacIntyre, who wrote episode 209. The biggest challenges were actually production challenges, because we were filming this while concurrently filming episode 208 AND 209! We wanted to make sure that the webisodes have the same production values as our show, obviously, so they were directed by Matt Hastings, who has directed some of our most visually stunning episodes.

Like Kol, Nathaniel Buzolic, romancing Mary-Alice Claire, the present day Kol, Daniel Sharman, is flirting with Davina Claire. If Mary-Alice, locked in the asylum, is still alive, will present day Kol and Davina go there to release her? According to Carina, the asylum is “going to become very important on the show.”
