Spoilers, press release synopsis, and promo pictures for The Originals 2×03 “Every Mother’s Son” episode!

The Originals Alice Evans, Esther Mikaelson, returns in 2×03 “Every Mother’s Son” and new witch Lenore, played by “The Wire”‘s Sonja Sohn, makes her first appearance.

After deciding that Esther would return as Harvest girl and witch Cassie, executive producer Michael Narducci said they had to find an actress who would have the same “regal authority” as Alice Evans had, who played Esther on The Vampire Diaries and will continue to play her in flashbacks. According to Michael, “Episode two is a great showcase for [Natalie] to play Esther.”

While the first season dealt with humans, witches, werewolves, and vampires, with the Mikaelsons in the middle, this season the witches are linked to Esther and her plans. Mikael also has a stake (not the White Oak kind) in her plans, too, since a witch brought him back.

Michael Narducci on the new NOLA power struggle

I think we are going to absolutely explore New Orleans and that four-sided political agenda and how can these four sides of people ever live in peace, but the war is much more personal because now you have brother vs. brother and all the sides are represented by the Mikaelson family.

Cami will also be pulled into the political foray, especially since Vincent/Finn is now her college advisor. Michael says at first we’ll think it’s one thing that’s pulling her in, only to find out it’s really something else. He hints that it will be something freaky!

Since Esther/Cassie thinks the baby is dead, she’ll be focusing her agenda on Klaus and Elijah, but eventually it will spread out to involve both Rebekah and the baby. More evil than gangsters or mobsters is family. Brother against brother. Parents against children. Children against parents.

So we’ll definitely be seeing Rebekah, played by Claire Holt, this season, as well as baby Hope. According to Michael, it will be an important part of season 2.

As to what Esther’s plan for that baby is … Esther thinks the baby died. Esther doesn’t know where Rebekah is. She’s coming back with a definite agenda that we’ll start to see unpacked in Episodes 2 and 3.

Michael also says we’ll find out why Finn is so obsessed with pleasing Mama Esther. We’ll see where it comes from that makes him so devoted to her. According to Michael, “[O]nce you get to know him, [you realize] he has a perspective, there’s a mission statement behind what he’s doing. There’s a world where you’re kind of rooting for him too.”
