The CW renews The Originals for season 3, The Vampire Diaries for season 7, and six other shows!

Fang fans rejoice! At the Television Critics Association in Pasadena on January 11, 2015, The CW announced The Originals is renewed for season 3, The Vampire Diaries for season 7, Supernatural for season 11, Arrow season 4, Reign and The 100 both season 3, and newcomers The Flash and Jane the Virgin both season 2. This is probably why executive producer Julie Plec, Joseph Morgan (Klaus Mikaelson on The Originals), and Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries) have such big smiles on their faces!

Mark Pedowitz, President of The CW, didn’t specify the number of episodes each show was renewed for, only that they were renewed. He also did not elaborate on whether the shows will continue to be aired on their current nights, or when their premiere dates would be for the 2015-16 season.

Chances are the episode number will depend on ratings. The Vampire Diaries, Arrow, The Flash, and Supernatural have had consistently strong ratings, so they’ve probably been renewed for full seasons of 22 shows. The ratings for The Originals have been good but not stellar, so it may or may not get a full season order for 22 shows. The remaining three shows, Reign, The 100, and Jane the Virgin have had fairly weak ratings, so they may only get 13-episode orders.

One of the current scripted shows which was not mentioned for renewal is Hart of Dixie, which is in it’s fourth season and currently airs on Friday.

Each of these series have helped define what The CW is today, a network that is home to smart, provocative, quality programming, targeting a savvy adult audience. By picking up these shows now, our executive producers can start planning next season’s storylines, and rolling these shows out throughout next season guarantees The CW will have more proven original series for our fall, midseason and summer 2016 line-ups.

Keep watching The Originals which currently airs on Mondays at 8/7c and The Vampire Diaries which currently airs on Thursdays at 8/7c, on The CW!
