12 Monkeys will be back for a second season on Syfy to fight the virus that almost wiped out humanity!

Syfy announced Thursday, March 12th, 2015, that they’re renewing their latest hit 12 Monkeys, the story of a virus that will eventually destroy humanity, for a second season.

Also announced was the change in showrunners from executive producer Natalie Chaidez to executive producers Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett. Natalie Chaidez is leaving to prep another upcoming Syfy series named “Hunters.”

If you haven’t watched 12 Monkeys, its about James Cole, played by Aaron Stanford, and his post-apocalyptic future where he’s involved with Katrina Jones, played by Barbara Sukowa, and her dangerous and untested project to time travel from 2043 back to the past to find and stop a virus that will wipe out humanity. Traveling back to 2015, he meets and is assisted by Dr. Cassandra Railly, played by Amanda Schull, a virologist. The series is based on the 1995 film “12 Monkeys” by Terry Gilliam that starred Bruce Willis as Cole and Brad Pitt as Jeffrey Goines. In the Syfy series Jeffrey becomes Jennifer, played by Emily Hampshire, the daughter of the man who allegedly created the virus.

Matt Roush of TV Guide calls the series “TV’s trippiest thriller” as it bounces back and forth from 1943, Cole’s present, to 2015, the year the virus was released, and various years inbetween. Along the way, timelines collapse and collide with each other as time-tripping Cole “splinters” himself, becoming more frazzled with each one as the virus remains out of reach. Orchestrating the release of the virus is a tall, creepy man dressed in black, including hat, played by Tom Noonan.

So what happens if you meet yourself in the past? According to Cole, “Believe me, you don’t want to be around for a paradox.” One paradox of being in the same place but not the same place has one version of Cole being shot while another version of Cole watches himself being shot, to which he says, “You shot me…Not me me, the other me!” Makes perfect sense!

The cast includes Aaron Stanford as James Cole, Amanda Schull from “Suits” as Dr. Cassandra Railly, Barbara Sukowa as Katrina Jones, Kirk Acevedo from “Fringe” as Ramse, Demore Barnes as Whitley, Noah Bean as Aaron Marker, Murray Furrow as Dr. Lasky, Emily Hampshire as Jennifer Goines, Tom Noonan as the creepy Pallid Man, Todd Stashwick from The Originals as Deacon, and Zeljko Ivanek as Leland Goines.
