Spoiler: Joseph Morgan on whether Klaus needs a love interest on The Originals!

There’s a love interest on The Vampire Diaries fans are waiting for, but what about on The Originals? What does Joseph Morgan think about a love interest for Klaus on The Originals? Short of Caroline coming over, the current options are Cami or Hayley!

In a recent interview, Joseph revealed that his character is a jealous bloke who wants to be the center of attention rather than having a love interest! Tell that to Cami, who recently has been doing a lot of flirting and care-giving to our favorite psychotic hybrid!

Joseph on Klaus’ jealousy

He’s very jealous, that’s why he hates when Elijah and Rebekah are conspiring, and he hates if Elijah and Hayley are together, because that’s Elijah playing surrogate father to his child. Even though he doesn’t want to be there, he doesn’t want Elijah to be there [either]. He wants everybody to be focused on him, but he lacks the emotional tools to form healthy relationships with any of these people, so they’re drawn to each other instead.

He says Klaus is a natural born loner who destroys every relationship he has. This is one reason he told Cami to leave in the season finale “From a Cradle to a Grave” and why he doesn’t want to mentor Hayley, in spite or Elijah’s urgings.

According to Joseph, it’s difficult for Klaus and Hayley to communicate because they’re still going through the loss of their baby daughter. Plus Hayley is struggling with her identity since she’s now a hybrid. She’s been thrust into the vampire world of Elijah and Marcel, and has lost the trust of her werewolf pack who now want nothing to do with her. However, this could change in the next few episodes where Hayley undergoes a ritual to see if she gets her throne back as Queen.

Joseph confides that Klaus and Hayley have a “turbulent relationship” and shouldn’t be in each others’ lives, but because of baby Hope they’re forced to. “It’s a very interesting and very human dynamic to play.” On Facebook their relationship would be “It’s Complicated”!

In the last couple of episodes Klaus has been letting Cami get closer to him. She even got him to dance! But her advice might not be the best in the world since she advised him not to kill his father, Mikael, and he’s promised her that he won’t kill Kaleb, who is really Kol. In the sneak peek for “Wheel Inside the Wheel” when Vincent reminds her that she said Klaus is dangerous she responds, “Not to me.” Is she showing a little over confidence? Does she know something we haven’t seen yet? Or is she just getting annoyed with Vincent!

With Papa and Mama Mikaelson back in town, gunning for their not-so-favorite son each in their own way, Klaus has other things to deal with besides who he might want to have a love interest relationship with.

Joseph on Klaus’ parental threat

He’s very emotionally threatened by his mother, because he’s always been a bit of a mummy’s boy. He learned at a young age that Mikael was not his birth father, but he’s always desired that kind of affirmation and affection from both parents. Mikael can be a very physically imposing threat to Klaus, and we will see some physical confrontations, but also some emotional confrontations with the parents. I’m really not sure who is the bigger threat. I’d say Mikael is more direct in his confrontations, and Esther is more manipulative.

In spite of his parents, the witches, werewolf issues, and his self-destructive nature, Joseph says nothing will distract him from his goal of reuniting his family and bringing Hope back, which means making New Orleans a safe place for her.

Joseph on Hope and Klaus’ redemption

[Klaus’ goal] 100 percent is to make New Orleans safe for his daughter, so he can bring her back and reunite their family. He wants the chance at redemption that his daughter will bring him, and he wants a chance to be a father. But he can’t do that while his enemies are running New Orleans.

So chances are there won’t be a love interest anytime soon for our lonely hybrid. But you never know!
