Riley Voelkel has been promoted to series regular as Freya Mikaelson in The Originals!
Freya mysteriously came on the scene in the sanitarium where Rebekah was locked in after Mama Mikaelson transferred her into the body of witch Eva Sinclair, played by Maisie Richardson-Sellers. Eventually Riley Voelkel took over the role of Freya, revealed she was Rebekah’s sister, and helped her escape.
Klaus didn’t exactly welcome her with open arms, but was his usual suspicious self. Elijah, though cautious, was more willing to accept her, especially after being assured she could help defeat their dreaded Aunt Dahlia, who wanted to take Hope for her own to use her power.
After all the twists and turns, the Mikaelson family stuck together in “Ashes to Ashes,” and with the surprise assistance of Mama Esther, played by returning favorite Alice Evans, they defeated Dahlia for good.
When the ashes had cleared, Freya gave Rebekah a choice of remaining a vampire, played by Claire Holt, or remaining a witch. As part of Klaus’ plan to save Hope, Hayley was cursed to her werewolf form so Dahlia wouldn’t kill her. As for Klaus, he decided to give up his throne and concentrate on being a father to Hope.
Season 2 of The Originals began with Rebekah telling a fairy tale to Hope, and it ended with Klaus telling her another fairy tale. In the end, family won again. Always and forever. Season 3 will begin a whole new chapter in the lives of the Mikaelson family, which now includes sister Freya.
Executive producer Michael Narducci on Riley’s Freya
Freya is going to stick around and help raise [Hope]. She’s allowing Rebekah the chance to go have a life by sticking around. I’m really excited to see what role this new sister is going to have in the family and how she may play off of both of her brothers. I’m really excited about that family dynamic.
Although Riley was born in the United States on April 26th, 1990, she grew up in Canada. She was on a softball team for 9 years during school, but a month before heading to college, a modeling scout picked her and she headed to New York. She wasn’t successful getting an agent in New York, but had better luck when she moved to Los Angeles. But she didn’t model for long before she turned to acting.
She got her big break as a club girl in “The Social Network” in 2010, after which she got the role of Carrie Smith in her first feature movie, an independent film titled “The Secret Lives of Dorks,” which was released in 2013. From 2012 to 2014 she played Jennifer Johnson in HBO’s “The Newsroom,” and in 2014 was cast as Lorelei Sumner in “Point of Honor” which also stars Nathan Parsons as John Rhodes. In 2011 she played Claire in “Prom,” which starred Danielle Campbell. The Originals must have been like a family reunion for Riley!
Other roles include Tristan in “The Mentalist,” young Fiona in “American Horror Story,” and Sam in “Glee.”
The Originals season 3, now also starring Riley Voelkel, returns for a new chapter on Thursday, October, 2015, at 9/8c, after The Vampire Diaries, on The CW!
