The Vampire Diaries 7×09 “Cold as Ice” begins with Chicago, three years from now Stefan is living with Valerie. They’re on the run and in love. Stefan leaves and Valerie looks so worried.

In present time, Stefan and Damon are carrying their mother to her resting spot. It’s snowing and tragically beautiful. Valerie and Nora are there. Stefan and Nora want to say something for Lily. Nora thanks her for all that she’s done. Valerie then says her goodbye and it’s then Stefan’s turn. The girls leave and it’s time to bury her. However, Damon is of course a smart ass. Stefan opens the casket and tells her he’s sorry.

Caroline is doing a toy drive at the college. Caroline is craving blood more than usual. Bonnie is watching over Caroline and helping her with the toy for tots drive. Ric shows up and is going to a birthing class with Caroline.

Stefan and Damon are walking around and talking about Caroline’s pregnancy. Damon warns Stefan that Caroline will want to keep the babies, or at least be in their lives.

Mary-Louise is at the Salvatore house. Valerie goes to pick somethings but Mary-Louise is still upset. Valerie doesn’t take kindly to Mary-Louise’s temper. Meanwhile at the bar. Nora finds Bonnie and gives her a present for the toy for tots drive. Nora is going to start going to school with Caroline and Bonnie. Bonnie is going to put Nora to work since Nora really wants to help.

Damon and Stefan are still looking for Julian. They stop at a nearby pub for a refill of boos. They walk inside and there is a whole bar full of dead Santa’s. Damon wants to go but Stefan is ready to find Julian now and kill him. Damon calls Bonnie, asking for her help. Bonnie agrees to try to help and she looks at Nora coming up with a plan.

At the pregnancy class, Caroline is being the over achiever that she is. The class seems to go well. Ric let’s Caroline know he’s reading the books that she does. Caroline over hears a couple’s conversation. They’re talking about Ric being Caroline’s teacher and her being pregnant.

Nora is being too judgmental over toys. Bonnie goes over and tries to warm up to Nora. Nora is open to helping Bonnie. With Stefan and Damon, they’re sitting in the pub with the dead Santa’s and sharing a drink. Julian comes stumbling in. He’s very drunk. Julian’s pain is real, he of course loved Lily. Julian pulls the dagger from his back pocket. He explains the dagger to them. He’s going a little crazy due to the stone in the dagger.

Bonnie texts and  warns Stefan and Damon to leave, but before they can Julian introduces them to his friends from back in the day. Stefan doesn’t back down from Julian. Damon catches the bodies on fire and rushes him and Stefan out.

At the hospital, Nora is doing a good job of handing out presents. Bonnie warns Nora about living in the past and Mary-Louise suddenly shows up. Ric and Caroline are at his house. She freaks out a little bit and she’s super moody. She doesn’t understand what’s going on.

Back at the hospital, Nora and Mary-Louise go and talk. Mary wants an apology, but Nora isn’t going to. She’s upset that Mary can’t see past Julian’s manipulation. Nora ends things for good. Mary starts accusing Nora of things. She then leaves in anger.

Stefan and Damon are walking in an alley arguing. Stefan starts calling Damon a coward and telling him how horrible it was that he didn’t say something to Lily before she died. Damon tells him to stay, or come with him…but either way he’s leaving.

 

“Cold as Ice” press release synopsis

THE SALVATORES ARE COMING TO TOWN — With the holidays in full swing, a search for Julian leads Damon and Stefan to a small town outside of Mystic Falls. While managing a holiday toy drive at Whitmore College, Bonnie (Kat Graham) seeks help from Nora (guest star Scarlett Byrne) and the two strike up an unlikely friendship. Elsewhere, Caroline (Candice King) does her best to navigate her new life as a pregnant vampire, while Alaric (Matt Davis) grows concerned that the pregnancy is effecting her more than she’s letting on. Finally, after finding himself at odds with Damon, Stefan is forced to take matters into his own hands, setting off a tragic chain of events that leaves their lives changed forever.

 

Valerie finds Stefan’s journal in her car. Stefan calls Valerie to warn her. Stefan tells Valerie to find Mary-Louise. Stefan finds Mary in the bar. They’re holding her for a sort of ransom against Julian. Nora is waiting for Bonnie in Bonnie’s dorm room. Bonnie tries to make Nora see what she is missing in their relationship. They have a good little talk and Nora leaves after thanking her. Except Julian texts Nora, telling her that they’ve taken Mary.

Damon is at home when Julian shows up. He’s quite aggravated. Damon and Julian talk about Lily and Damon’s anger towards her. Julian tries to dagger Damon but Stefan comes in to save the day. He jumps Julian but Julian still escapes.

Caroline goes to visit her mother’s grave. She’s sad that this is her first Christmas without her. Caroline, got her a pretty wreath and tells her about the twins. Caroline tells her mom that she just wants to what is right for the twins.

At the Salvatore house, Julian is still there. The Salvatores and Julian start to rumble. Damon gives him a good fight, then it’s Stefan’s turn. Stefan gets stabbed and then Damon does. Julian stabs Damon with the dagger.

Valerie is watching over Mary when she hears a noise. Someone takes Mary. Caroline goes to help Stefan. Stefan is watching over Damon’s body. Caroline tries to comfort him.

Caroline tries to call Bonnie but Bonnie is on the floor passed out. Stefan is worried about Damon lasting in his own hell. It cut’s to Damon’s dream and he’s in the civil war again. Nora shows up and then daggers Stefan right in front of Caroline.

 

The next episode of The Vampire Diaries will be 7×10 “Hell Is Other People” on Friday, January 29th, 2016, at 8/7c, followed by The Originals 3×10 “Ghost of the Mississippi” at 9/8c, on The CW!
