Nina Dobrev, Elena Gilbert, The Vampire Diaries

Goodnight not goodbye for Elena in The Vampire Diaries 6×22 “I’m Thinking of You All the While” finale!

In The Vampire Diaries season 6 finale 6×22 “I’m Thinking of You All the While” everybody said goodnight but not goodbye to Elena as dreams until she or Bonnie dies.

The six year journey of Elena Gilbert didn’t end in death, but it did end in a coffin.

The episode began with Damon lying in the middle of the road. Elena comes to him and wants to dance.

The episode continues where “I’ll Wed You in the Golden Sunshine” ended, with the emotional aftermath of Kai’s return when he killed sister Jo as she was marrying Alaric. Goodbye Jo and goodbye twins. He didn’t want another set of twins to eventually merge and take his place as the leader of the Gemini coven. But killing Jo didn’t save him from Damon for what he did to Elena.

Kai stabbed himself in the neck and died, but came back as a vampire. He had died with Lily’s blood in his system, and his first feed was on his father. When a despondent Alaric, after putting his almost wife into the truck of his car, took a pistol out and shot Kai 5 times, the newbie vamp pulled the bullets out. Then Alaric put the gun to his temple and pulled. But no more bullets. Kai just looked and said, “Somebody’s having a bad day.”

He thought he got even with Bonnie for leaving him in the prison world by linking her and Elena together. As long as Bonnie lived, Elena would sleep and never age. If anybody attempted to counteract the spell, Bonnie and Elena would both die.

When Damon found out he went and found Bonnie dying from trying to attack Kai at the wedding venue. Kai assumed Damon would kill Bonnie, so he gave him a choice. Elena could sleep her life away but never age or he could let Bonnie die, which would make Elena wake up. Damon, appearing selfish, kissed Bonnie on the forehead and walked away. Kai was rather surprised, since he expected Damon would kill her straight away. As Kai was lamenting the fact that Damon was going to let Bonnie die, Damon came up from behind him and beheaded him. Then he went and gave Bonnie his blood, saving her and proving he was a changed man. He saved his best friend instead of the woman he loved.

A heartwrenching scene was between Tyler and Liv. Tyler was dying. After telling each other “I love you,” Liv noticed it was a full moon. She was going to die anyway, so if he helped her die, he would live by triggering his werewolf curse. One of the things Tyler did after becoming a werewolf was attack and bite Kai, who was now a vampire. However, before Kai attacked Bonnie and was beheaded by Damon, he drained the werewolf venom out of his system and healed himself.

“I’m Thinking of You All the While” press release synopsis

GOODBYE, MYSTIC FALLS – In the aftermath of Alaric (Matt Davis) and Jo’s (guest star Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) powerful nuptials, things take a dramatic turn when an uninvited guest shows up, leaving Elena (Nina Dobrev) in terrible jeopardy. Despite Matt’s (Zach Roerig) advice to leave town to protect herself, a defiant Bonnie (Kat Graham) takes matters into her own hands after finding herself on the receiving end of a twisted plan. As Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola) reach an emotional crossroad in their relationship, a reunion with Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell) leaves Tyler (Michael Trevino) faced with a decision that could change his life forever. Meanwhile, Lily’s (guest star Annie Wersching) reckless actions cause Stefan to realize the lengths to which his mother will go to reunite with her “family.” Finally, after a devastating chain of events, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is forced to make the most difficult decision of his life. Michael Malarkey also stars.

There were numerous dream sequences throughout the episode of Elena and each of the other characters. Each moment involved Elena telling her wishes for them.

Caroline and Bonnie said goodbye in a sleepover where Elena asked them to keep journals of their lives so when she woke up she could read them. After Caroline said goodbye and Elena and Bonnie were alone, she asked Bonnie to levitate feathers the way she did the first time her magic worked.

Elena pleaded with Alaric to be strong since his life was completely in shambles after losing Jo and their twins. She told him to let his emotions out and really feel them, even though it would be hard.

She told Matt to follow his dreams of being a cop and remain the loyal and good human being in the group. At the end it looked like he followed her wish, but we’ll learn at what price when season 7 starts.

For Tyler, she advised him to not let his werewolf side define him. Instead just be the awesome person he was. She told him to leave Mystic Falls so he could figure out who he really was. This episode was also Michael Trevino’s last episode as a series regular, but Caroline Dries and Julie Plec promised that he’ll return in guest appearances.

Jeremy returned to let her know he was living the live he was born to live. However, he didn’t tell her that it was the life of a hunter and not an artist.

At the waterfall, Elena told Stefan he knew she never wanted to be a vampire, but thanked him for showing her an exciting world and wanted to see what his life would be like when she woke up.

After everybody said their goodbyes, Stefan and Damon shut her coffin and took it to a safe place where Bonnie would put a cloaking spell on it so nobody would ever disturb it. Then it was Damon’s turn to say goodbye.

Damon and Elena are on the road and after they confess their undying love to each other, they dance. A beautiful dance, swirling, and lifting, and looking into each others eyes. A dance to last all night. A dance to last for the rest of their lives.

Stefan told Caroline that he cared for her and that he would be there for her. When she was ready for him, he would be ready for her. Then he kissed her on the cheek. Perhaps it was the same cheek that Klaus kissed when he told her that Tyler was her first love, but that he intended to be her last. Steroline vs. Klaroline. Hmmm!!!

“Goodbye Elena” promo for “I’m Thinking of You All the While”

The season 6 finale ended with Lily and Enzo finding the building where Kai brought her “family” back. He had it cloaked but when he died it appeared. Then a time jump showed what looked like a devastated Mystic Falls with Matt patrolling in a squad car. As Matt’s squad car passes the clock tower, it was revealed that Damon was keeping watch from the top.

Has Lily’s “family” made Mystic Falls a wasteland, and is Damon helping Matt by keeping watch for them to protect any remaining citizens in Mystic Falls? Guess we’ll find out in season 7 of The Vampire Diaries!
