Paul Wesley, who plays Stefan Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries, has been branching out into directing and producing and talks about his new movie “Amira & Sam”!

Last season on The Vampire Diaries Paul directed 5×18 “Resident Evil” and this season he directed 6×11 “Woke Up With a Monster.” In addition to his vampire duties, he has his eye set on producing and has been making some rounds promoting his new movie “Amira & Sam,” which will be in limited theatrical release in 20 cities beginning January 30th, 2015.

In “Amira & Sam,” Sam is played by Martin Starr and Paul plays Charlie, his cousin. It’s a romantic comedy about army Vet Sam and Iraqi immigrant Amira, played by Dina Shihabi, who fall in unlikely love that’s put to the test when she faces deportation.

Paul loves the whole idea of making independent films. In the video below he talks about producing and directing as well as acting on The Vampire Diaries. He produced and starred in the independent film “Before I Disappear” which also stars Emmy Rossum and Ron Perlman. At the SXSW in March it won the audience award.

“I’m really proud of it,” Paul said. “We made it for no money.”

Paul will also be producing “Convergence” later this year with producer Adam Schroeder. “Theater is an actor’s medium. Television is a writer’s medium. Film is a director’s medium.” He went on to say that on TV there’s not much time for changes, but with producing you have the time to develop it.

“Convergence” is a sci-fi action film Paul will star in as well as produce. According to the few details available, it’s similar to Flatliners and The Matrix and based on science fact. “It follows a group of underground biotech engineers, including an MIT student wunderkind, exploring a new technology far beyond their expectations and beyond the limits of human control.”

To transition from younger material, Paul is looking for flawed characters. His “Convergence” character is the “guy who pushes things a little too far, and too hard, and produces some scary results.” It’s scheduled to begin filiming next spring in both Atlanta and Shanghai.

“Amira & Sam” synopsis

Rousing, smart, and sweet, Amira & Sam is a confident feature debut from writer-director Sean Mullin, and follows Sam (Martin Starr, “Freaks & Geeks,” “Silicon Valley”), an army veteran adapting back to civilian life after a lengthy tour overseas. Upon reuniting with his unit’s former Iraqi translator in New York City, he meets Amira (newcomer Dina Shihabi), his war buddy’s niece; suspicious of soldiers, she wants nothing to do with him. However, when Amira runs into immigration trouble, Sam offers to keep her safe at his apartment. After a rocky start, their unlikely friendship starts to blossom into something more.

Meanwhile, Sam’s cousin Charlie (Paul Wesley, “Before I Disappear,” “The Vampire Diaries”) offers him a lucrative opportunity at his hedge fund, helping to secure wealthy veterans as new clients. However, all is not as it seems, and Amira and Sam soon find themselves faced with mounting obstacles in order to stay together.
