After six years Nina Dobrev is saying goodbye to Elena and The Vampire Diaries family!
The Vampire Diaries Nina Dobrev said her journey would be a six season adventure, and announced she would be leaving the series. Michael Trevino will also be leaving.
Although Nina is leaving the series for good, Michael Trevino will just be leaving as a series regular. They are both looking forward to new opportunities. Michael, Tyler Lockwood, will be co-starring in the new ABC pilot “The Kingmakers,” which is about Eli, played by Gus Halper, who infiltrates an Ivy League university to investigate the death of his sister.
Julie Plec said even though Michael is going to explore other opportunities, he’ll always be a member of the family and she’s looking forward to discovering creative ways to keep his character, Tyler Lockwood, a part of the show.
Nina’s announcement about leaving
I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there’s still so much more to come before the season finale in May.
I love you all. Fasten your seat belts. If you think you know what’s coming, you don’t.
Julie said Nina‘s goodbye is “bittersweet and beautiful.” After six years the cast and crew have become close and she didn’t think any of them expected it. She said they’ll miss Nina and “the four hundred characters she played” and look forward to the challenge of telling stories about the Salvatore Brothers and their other “much-loved and gifted ensemble.”
Nina and Julie Plec
It looks like Elena will be taking the cure and will become human again. Julie Plec has mentioned there may be a flashfoward, no doubt showing Elena in her new life. However the exit goes down, Nina said she thinks characters need to really die on The Vampire Diaries in order to “remain relevant.”
Nina on the death of characters
As soon as you start bringing people back, you kinda lose that. I mean, it’s great for me, personally, because I get to hang out with my friends, but from a story standpoint, now you don’t care or believe when someone dies because you’ve seen how easily they can come back. The witches can always fix it, somehow. It’s been six years, so I think it would be good to go down the list and cross them off.
Was this a foreshadowing that instead of becoming human again that Elena will actually die from the cure? The flashforward may be Damon creating an artificial reality for her as she dies. Only three more episodes before we find out.
The season 6 finale of The Vampire Diaries, and Elena and Nina’s exit, airs Thursday, May 14th, 2015, at 8/7c, on The CW!
