Nina Dobrev, Tatia, The Originals

The Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev crosses over as Tatia in The Originals 2×05 “Red Door” episode rerun!

You can’t keep a good doppelganger down, as Nina Dobrev crosses to The Originals as Tatia, the original one, in the 2×05 “Red Door” episode! But who loved her best? Elijah or Klaus?

Back in season 3 of The Vampire Diaries Tatia Petrovia, the original doppelganger, was mentioned as the girl both brothers loved and how it resulted in their becoming vampires. As Julie Plec explains, “What we remember from The Vampire Diaries, for those who watch both shows, is that [Klaus and Elijah] both loved her, so it’s a little bit of history repeating itself like with Stefan [Paul Wesley] and Damon [Ian Somerhalder].”

Then Esther, their mother, killed her to “make Klaus not a hybrid.” Tatia’s character not only has secrets, romance, and scandal, but also terrible tragedy, which we’ll get a glimpse of in Viking-era flashbacks.

According to executive producer Michael Narducci, they couldn’t do this story without the actress who played all the other doppelgangers, Elena, Katherine, and Amara, so they “basically got on our knees and begged her,” and she wonderfully agreed. The story they tell explains Tatia’s fate as well as her relationship with Elijah and Klaus. Their story is beautiful and also tragic.

Nina Dobrev on Tatia, the original doppelganger

She’s the very first doppelganger so she doesn’t have the history of all the other doppelgangers behind her. She is the purest of them all, she’s the most unaffected, she’s the most regular – almost like how Elena was before all this shit happened. But it definitely catches up to her as any character on this show affected by all these supernatural beings [are]. It doesn’t really go well for her. It’s all about love and happiness until everything goes wrong.

Joseph Morgan, who plays Klaus, says he’s grateful Nina could come to The Originals to help give insight into Klaus and Elijah’s relationship with their mother Esther and what happened when they loved the same beautiful girl. “We’re grateful for Nina coming over… so we could tell that story because I think it needed to be told and it definitely informed who the brothers are today.”
