Matt Ryan, John Constantine, Constantine

Welsh actor Matt Ryan stars in NBC’s “Constantine” as TV’s new demon hunter!

NBC’s “Constantine” starring Welsh actor Matt Ryan as demon hunter John Constantine joins the other D.C. Comics-inspired TV series like “Arrow” and The CW’s new series “The Flash.”

The series is based on trenchcoat wearing antihero John Constantine, the Liverpool occult detective of DC Comics fame who chain smokes his way through demons with foul-mouthed snarkiness and cynicism as he rids the world of nasty supernaturals. Similar to but not quite like Sam and Dean rolled into one.

The character of the demon hunter was a lead character in the D.C. Comics world in “Hellblazer” then in “Swamp Thing” in 1985, and a player in “Justice League Dark.” Keanu Reeves played him in the movie of the same name in 2005.

The pilot was executive produced by Daniel Cerone of “Dexter” and David Goyer of “The Dark Knight” trilogy and was directed by Neil Marshall of “Game of Thrones.”

David Goyer on “Constantine”

I’ve been a fan of John Constantine since he was first introduced in 1985. This Constantine, envisioned by Neil Marshall and embodied by Matt Ryan, looks like he sprang directly from the comics’ covers.

Harold Perrineau, “Lost,” also joins Matt as a devil-eyed angel with an intriguing, cryptic agenda. Probably not quite like Misha Collin’s angel Castiel. The trailer for the series shows our hero in a psychiatric hospital that he voluntarily checked himself into. His business card reads “exorcist and master of the dark arts” but he corrects this by saying, “I should really change that to petty dabbler. I hate to put on airs.”

Matt was born in Swansea, where another English/Welsh actor named Joseph Morgan lived for 11 years. He finished a BTEC Performing Arts course at Gorseinon College, graduated in 2003 from the Bristol Old Vid, and in 2004 joined the Royal Shakespeare Company.

His other roles include Mr. Pace in “The Tudors,” Dale in “Torchwood,” Mick Rawson in “Criminal Minds,” and Edward Sterling in “Armistice” which also starred Joseph as A.J. Budd.

Matt and Joseph have been best buds for over 20 years, and he was Jomo’s best man when he got married July 5th, 2014, in Jamaica! Other connections, directly or indirectly, include Alice Evans, Esther Mikaelson on The Originals, who is married to Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd who stars as immortal Dr. Henry Morgan in ABC’s “Forever,” who is best buds with Matthew Rhys who plays very mortal Phillip Jennings on “The Americans” on FX.
