Ioan Gruffudd, Dr. Henry Morgan, Forever

Watch Ioan Gruffudd in his new “Forever” series on ABC!

There are a lot of new shows this season, one of which is the ABC drama “Forever” starring Ioan Gruffudd! Although not a vampire, his character Dr. Henry Morgan is immortal!

Although the immortal Dr. Henry Morgan is not a vampire, Ioan Gruffudd who plays him is married to the self-described “Mother of all vampires” Alice Evans, who played Esther Mikaelson on The Vampire Diaries and whose spell created the Original vampires. Although Alice hasn’t appeared on The Originals yet, like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s terminator she promises, “I’ll be back!”

Handsome and sexy Ioan plays the 235-year old Dr. Henry, who works in New York City’s coroner’s office as a medical examiner. The good doctor definitely knows about death, having died many times before. In fact, in the pilot he apparently dies 3 or 4 times. But this doesn’t mean he’ll die in every episode. Even though he’s immortal, he’ll still feel the pain of death, and whenever he dies, he comes back in water and naked! As executive producer Matt Miller joked, “A little something for the audience!”

In this procedural, Dr. Henry is paired with Detective Jo Martinez, played by Alana De La Garza, formerly of “Law & Order,” who recently lost her husband to a heart attack. Dr. Henry’s long life has honed his Sherlock-type skills of observation and insight as he tries to unravel the mystery of his immortality. These special skills impress and intrigue Jo, who is keeping her own secrets while trying to uncover his. Each case reveals more of his colorful and extraordinary past while bringing them closer together. When they team up on a case, he feels like he’s found a kindred spirit and a reason to keep living.

They’re both dealing with loss and mortality and development an emotional connection. It reawakens him to life.

As Henry searches for the cause of his condition, he discovers he’s not the only immortal.

The concept of “Forever” goes to Matt’s 5-year-old son who asked “Daddy, are you ever going to die?” Not wanting to lie, he told him, “I will die, but it won’t be for a very long time and by then you’ll probably want me dead.” His son burst into tears, but the idea of immortality as a curse got him thinking about the pain of seeing your children growing old and dying while you still lived. Ultimately though the show is about hope, “It can always get better – that’s what keeps us going!”

When asked if there was any type of death that could eventually kill Dr. Henry for good, Matt joked, “Cancellation!”

The series also stars Judd Hirsch as Abe, who is Henry’s only and best friend who knows his immortal secret. Abe is a romantic and the optimistic one in their unconventional relationship. “Forever” also includes Lorraine Touissant from “Orange is the New Black” as Lt. Joanne Reece, Joel David Moore of “Bones” as Lucas, and Donnie Keshawarz of “Homeland” as Detective Hanson.

Matt Miller created the series and executive produces it with Dan Lin (“Sherlock Holmes”) and Jennifer Gwartz (“Veronica Mars”). Matt also wrote the pilot.
