Annie Wersching returns as Lily in a major recurring arc for The Vampire Diaries season 7!

Annie Wersching, who arrived in The Vampire Diaries season 6 as Lily Salvatore, will be returning as Mama Salvatore in a recurring arc for season 7!

Annie’s Mama Salvatore joins her sons Damon, played by Ian Somerhalder, and Stefan, played by Paul Wesley. She’ll have a major arc in season 7 of the series, which will probably involve her heretic vampire/witch “family” and Enzo, whom Lily sired back in 1903.

After Nina Dobrev, who played Elena Gilbert, decided not to return after season 6, Annie’s character of Lily became a crucial element to the ongoing plot of the series, especially with her “family” returning from the 1903 prison to present day Mystic Falls, thanks to witch turned vampire Kai Parker. Upon his return, he killed his sister Jo and linked Elena to Bonnie as revenge for her leaving him in the 1903 prison world. As long as Bonnie lives, Elena will remain in an ageless slumber.

Enzo seems to be sticking by Lily’s side, so where could this lead? Michael Malarkey will also have a meatier storyline in season 7, since he’ll be in the middle of Lily and her sons. According to Michael Malarkey, who plays Enzo, hints there’s definitely a chemistry there, “We don’t explore it too much, but I’m sure we’re going to be delving more into it in season seven.”

He’s eventually going to have to choose a side. In some ways, he feels drawn to Lily; she turned him and she’s the only real family he has. But he’s also friends with Damon, so it’s going to create an interesting dilemma, and whichever side he chooses will have serious ramifications.

Executive producer Caroline Dries goes on to say that Stefan is going to be more of a hero in season 7. No doubt to go with his “hero hair”!

Caroline Dries on Stefan’s hero role

I’m really excited to see Stefan come into his own and he’ll really take to the role of a hero, which will be really cool. He’s always been a hero but I think in a broader sense he’ll become more heroic next season.

As for how long The Vampire Diaries may last without its original leading lady, at the 2015 Upfronts The CW’s boss, Mark Pedowitz, expressed his wish that the series will continue for many more seasons.

Annie has had recurring roles on “Bosch,” “Dallas,” and “Extant,” and presently also has a recurring role on “Castle” on ABC.

Season 7 of The Vampire Diaries returns October, 2015, at 8/7c, on The CW!
